What they learntBoth boys and girls learned reading, writing, arithmetic,
spelling and drill (PE). Boys learned technology: woodwork, maths and technical drawing, to help with work in factories, workshops or the army when they grew up. Girls took cookery and sewing lessons, to prepare them for motherhood and housework. The way children were most often taught was by repeating and copying down what the teacher had told them. |
The classroomsThe children would always be sitting in rows with the teacher sat at a desk or standing at the front.
Resources would be limited to maybe a globe for geograhpy, an abacus for maths and possibly some maps and pictures on the wall. Children would mainly write onto slates with chalk. To wipe it clean they would have to spit on it and wipe it with their sleeve or finger. Teachers would write onto paper using a pen with a metal nib, dipping it into ink. |
